CORNING, N.Y. -- Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW - news) today announced changes in its management structure, primarily in its Optical Communications organization. These changes, pursuant to announcements made by the company at its quarterly earnings call this past week, are designed to streamline Corning and ensure the company is aligned for the realities of today's optical communications marketplace. "Our commitment to optical communications remains strong. We continue to believe that the fundamental drivers of the optical layer, bandwidth growth and the need for lowest cost by carriers, will drive the use of optical equipment," said Wendell P. Weeks, Corning's president and chief operating officer. "With our new structure and seasoned leadership team in place, we are confident that when the telecommunications industry re-emerges, Corning will be well-positioned to maintain its leadership and take advantage of this growth." Alan T. Eusden, 46, has been appointed senior vice president, Global Business Support Services. In this new role, Eusden will lead a corporate-wide process to develop new operating models for delivering certain business support services to all Corning business and staff organizations globally. Robert B. Brown, 52, is named vice president and general manager, Optical Fiber. In his new role, Brown will focus on increasing Corning's competitive advantages in optical fiber, drawing on his extensive experience in manufacturing, engineering and general management. In order to gain greater efficiencies and market synergies, Corning's Optical Networking Devices and Photonic Technologies divisions will be integrated into a single business unit. Dr. Gerald J. Fine, 44, will lead this new organization and assume the title of senior vice president and general manager, Corning Photonic Technologies. Fine will be responsible for all photonics product lines including optical amplifiers, pump lasers, thin-film filters, dispersion compensation modules, couplers, optical switch modules, modulators and specialty fibers used in today's high-speed optical networks. Dr. Mark A. Newhouse, 44, is named vice president, New Products and Development for Photonic Technologies. Corning has regretfully accepted the resignation of Sanford D. Lyons, 45, president and chief executive officer, Corning Cable Systems, who has resigned from the company to pursue personal goals. Larry Aiello, Jr., 52, has been named president and chief executive officer, Corning Cable Systems. In this position, Aiello will be responsible for worldwide operations of Corning Cable Systems, an industry-leading global manufacturer of fiber optic and copper telecommunications system solutions and an integral part of Corning's Optical Communications business organization. Pamela C. Schneider, 48, is named senior vice president, operations chief of staff.
