BERLIN -- VI Systems GmbH, a leader in ultra-high speed optical components for data communications, introduces the A40-150C80 VCSEL (vertical cavity surface emitting laser) driver IC for short reach optical data transmission. The new VCSEL driver IC is designed for the use in high speed optical transceivers with serial data rates of up to 40 Gbit/s. The A40-150C is specified for the next generation of directly modulated VCSEL components with high data rates up to 40 Gbit/s. The device is capable to modulate VCSEL with very high frequencies to enable ultrahigh-speed data transmission over a 50/125um multi mode fiber.

The A40-150C driver IC is designed for current modulation of the VCSEL device. The supply voltage is specified with 3.3V. The dimensions are 800 µm x 600 µm. The power consumption is specified with typically 150mW (including the VCSEL).

Target applications are short reach optical receivers and transceiver modules used in optical communication networks and optical interconnects in the computer industry. Future serial standards are currently developed within Common Electrical Standard (CEI-28Gbit/s) and Ethernet IEEE 802.3ba (40/100 Gbit/s) as well as in a number of customer specific application.
