PETALUMA, Calif. -- Teknovus, the leading provider of semiconductors for broadband optical access networks, today announced its new TK3711 Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) Optical Network Unit (ONU) chip, which is in full production. This new Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) device is the only EPON chipset to provide two service ports including a gigabit User Network Interface (UNI), and hardware-based service-contract enforcement for advanced fiber to the home (FTTH) networks. Known for delivering superior price/performance EPON technology, the Teknovus TK3711 is the only EPON chipset on the market that's optimized for delivery of premium-grade, triple-play services -- voice, video, and data -- to residential customers.

With the demand for triple-play services growing exponentially, deployment and operational costs have become critical for service providers. By having two service ports, hardware-based service contract enforcement, and a built-in switch, the TK3711 enables cost-effective delivery of bandwidth-hungry residential services such as high-definition TV (HDTV). Further, the inclusion of carrier-grade management capabilities dramatically reduces operational complexity and cost.

"The TK3711 was developed for customers who want a true carrier-class, multi-service ONU," said Dr. Rex Naden, chief executive officer (CEO) of Teknovus. "The high level of integration in the TK3711 greatly simplifies the ONU design and offers the lowest cost to the point where mass deployment is now possible. The TK3711 is currently undergoing field trials before active deployment by a number of tier-1 service providers, worldwide."

Dr. Lowell Lamb, vice president of marketing at Teknovus, offered this assessment, "To meet carrier requirements for high-performance triple-play services for the residential markets, our customers are looking for an EPON chip that provides a two-port solution while supporting multi-service management at an aggressive cost point. The TK3711 meets all of their requirements."
