Rumor: Teknovus Gets Eyed, Marvell Gets GPON

Changes may be afoot in the PON chip market. EE Times reports today that Broadcom Corp. (Nasdaq: BRCM) and Cavium Inc. (Nasdaq: CAVM) are both interested in buying EPON specialist Teknovus Inc.

Either deal would put Teknovus in the hands of a broader chip supplier, one that offers more pieces of an EPON line card and might therefore be more attractive to equipment vendors.

Neither Broadcom nor Cavium has EPON technology, although Broadcom has a line of GPON chips. (See Broadcom Breaking Into GPON?, Broadcom Unveils GPON Chips, and Broadcom Blends GPON With MoCA .)

Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (Nasdaq: MRVL) is expected to introduce new EPON chips this week, EE Times adds. And Light Reading has heard that Marvell is also working on GPON chips, having acquired the technology from GPON player Iamba Networks Inc. , a deal announced in November 2008.

Well, the Marvell part came true, at least. That was quick.
