ATLANTA -- Cingular Wireless has won its lawsuit against data broker 1st Source Information Specialists, Inc., with the U.S. District Court in Atlanta, Ga. ordering the cell phone records peddler and associated individuals to pay Cingular $1.135 million in damages.

"This victory underscores the fact that Cingular will not tolerate data burglars," said Joaquin Carbonell, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Cingular Wireless. "We are fighting to protect customer privacy on other fronts as well, including filing new lawsuits against telemarketers and spammers."

In December 2005, Cingular filed a civil lawsuit alleging that 1st Source Information Specialists, Inc. unlawfully acquired and disseminated Cingular customer records. Cingular subsequently obtained a permanent injunction against the data broker.

All told, Cingular has filed seven lawsuits against more than 30 corporate and individual defendants for alleged cell phone records theft. Cingular has already obtained permanent injunctions against most of these defendants.
