LINTHICUM, Md. and CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Luminous Networks(TM), a leading provider of multiservice transport platforms that support voice, data, video, and wavelength services, and CIENA® Corporation (NASDAQ:CIEN - News), a leading global provider of innovative network solutions, announced today that the companies have signed a worldwide reseller agreement. Under the agreement, CIENA will market, sell and support Luminous Networks' entire PacketWave(TM) family of products. This partnership expands Luminous' worldwide sales presence and further extends CIENA's networking capabilities.

Luminous also announced today that CIENA has made a strategic investment in the company. For more information, see Luminous Networks' press release: "Luminous Networks Raises $25 Million in Series-E Round of Funding."

Supporting CIENA's LightWorks(TM) Services portfolio strategy, this partnership further enhances CIENA's set of comprehensive network solutions designed to help service providers capitalize on data and traditional service markets efficiently and profitably.

Luminous Networks' PacketWave products, which can efficiently aggregate data traffic and provide cost-effective support for TDM services, are interoperable with CIENA solutions, including ONLINE Metro(TM), ONLINE Edge(TM), CoreDirector® and the DN family of multiservice switches. The work necessary to integrate PacketWave into CIENA's ON-Center® Management Suite is already underway.

"Luminous' platform complements CIENA's LightWorks architecture," said Gary Smith, president and CEO of CIENA. "As CIENA continues its push toward more access-focused, multiservice solutions for converged networks, PacketWave extends our reach while enabling a more comprehensive overall solution for pull-through opportunities. We look forward to working with Luminous in answering the network needs of our current and future customers."

"Our partnership with CIENA is proof positive of the quality and strength of our products in the marketplace," said Alex Naqvi, president and CEO of Luminous Networks. "Luminous products have been deployed and are supporting live traffic in more than 50 networks worldwide. Through our relationship with CIENA, we expect to significantly increase our footprint and penetrate a broader customer base."

Luminous' PacketWave platform further enhances the ability of CIENA solutions to enable revenue-generating services for telecommunications carriers and cable service providers throughout their networks -- from the edge to the core. PacketWave's packet-based architecture significantly reduces transport and operational costs, since it carries voice, data and video services over a single network with a common management and provisioning system.
