Ciena Nets PBT Man

2:50 PM -- John Hawkins of Nortel Networks Ltd. has long been a flag-bearer for Provider Backbone Bridging - Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE, née PBT). He's been awfully quiet of late, but that's just because of Nortel's financial difficulties, right? Right?

Well, no. It has more to do with a new job. Hawkins is with Ciena Corp. (NYSE: CIEN) now.

To uncover Ciena's coup, Light Reading used subterfuge, intrigue, and the publicly viewable job-change announcement that Hawkins broadcast to an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) mailing list in January.

Yes, Hawkins changed jobs early this year and is working at Ciena's Alpharetta, Ga., R&D center. His title is Senior Product Marketing Manager, and his job involves the integration of World Wide Packets into Ciena's other product lines. (See Ciena Takes Out World Wide Packets, Did Ciena Overpay for WWP?, and PBT Key to Ciena Acquisition.)

Hawkins can still count himself a PBB-TE supporter, but he notes that Ciena also supports MPLS as an Ethernet transport option, a more neutral stance than Nortel was taking. (See Ciena Thinks Beyond PBB-TE.)

For those of you who don't know who John Hawkins is, here's a video of him from last year when he was working at Nortel:

John has always been good at being able to compose a sentence completely of acronyms but somehow making you think you still knew what he was talking about :)
