BARCELONA -- Mobile World Congress 2013-- The launch of 4G TD-LTE in mainland China will actually kick into gear this year.
China Mobile Ltd. president Yu Lie said Monday that the deployment will start this year after months of tests and trials for the home-grown flavor of 4G.
The chairman promised that the TD-LTE network will cover 100 Chinese cities by year's end. Compatible devices will launch in the third quarter, and he expects that 1 million will be purchased by the final days of 2013.
The news naturally has vendors at the conference in Barcelona salivating. China Mobile has already signed up seven usual suspects as suppliers. It has also just inked a deal with ZTE Corp. for 4G.
Hardwire providers, however, appear to still be waiting to find out exactly who gets what out of multiple TD-LTE deals with China Mobile.
