Charter Struggles in Second Quarter

Charter Communications Inc. was featured in an investment advice column on The Motley Fool yesterday titled 'Danger! Horror! Get Out!' as a case study 'example of what to avoid' in the U.S. stock market. Ouch. Charter shares continued their decline, closing at $1.15 yesterday; following a jump in trading volume after the MSO announced its second-quarter earnings on Tuesday. Charter added an anemic 43,800 high-speed data customers in Q2, the MSO's worst quarterly performance in nearly five years. Adding insult to injury, Charter actually lost 9,000 digital video customers and 41,700 analog video customers. And much to Charter's chagrin, the MSO's IP telephone rollout is stuck in the slow lane, counting a mere 12,500 voice customer additions in Q2. Granted, that voice total is 22% higher than Q1, but well behind where Charter had hoped to be.
