$1.4 billion optical fibre network will connect around 80 cities

HAMILTON, Bermuda -- Cable & Wireless, the global telecommunications group, today (30 October 2000) announced a major initiative to create a national state-of-the-art optical fibre network in Japan. This advanced network will enable the group to deliver a new standard in IP (internet protocol) and Data services to business customers throughout Japan. The total investment will be US$ 1.4 billion (Yen 150 billion) over a five year period, and represents the largest single investment by a UK company in the Japanese telecoms industry. One thousand new jobs at Cable & Wireless IDC, the group's Japanese business, will be created. The network will connect around 80 cities in all 47 prefectures, and will include 65 Points of Presence (POPs) and 75 Points of Interconnect (POIs).
