CacheLogic™ Ltd, an innovative startup focused on providing solutions to alleviate broadband traffic infrastructure costs for Internet Service Providers (ISPs), today announced the Streamsight™ 510. The Streamsight 510 is the first product to identify in ‘real-time’ (and understand the usage of), all major protocols traversing a Service Provider’s network. Through its unique deep packet inspection capabilities, the Streamsight 510 can even identify traffic ‘masquerading’ as other applications, such as those pretending to be Web or email requests as opposed to a P2P file exchange. Using a Streamsight product enables ISPs to monitor network traffic by protocol, allowing them to finally answer key questions related to both their business and subscriber base.

Unique P2P Usage Data Uncovered

Through close cooperation with early customers, CacheLogic has accumulated a wealth of never-before-seen data regarding global patterns of P2P traffic and usage. This sudy was undertaken as a proof-of-capability demonstration showcasing the power and versatility of the Streamsight product.

Through this analysis using the Streamsight 510, CacheLogic can conclusively report that BitTorrent is now the most popular P2P protocol worldwide, consuming significantly more network resources than any other network application. BitTorrent now also replaces KaZaA™ as the most popular P2P protocol on both a per-continent and worldwide basis. Through Streamsight’s deep packet analysis, CacheLogic has also confirmed that the total population logged onto the major P2P networks at any one point in time is approximately 10 million users, sharing over 10,000,000 GB (10 Petabytes) worth of data.

Streamsight analysis also confirms that the vast majority of Peer-to-Peer traffic volumes results from large files such as movies and not the typically assumed MP3s. In many circumstances, the typical file size is greater than 100Mb per file transfer. For additional data reports and specific statistics, visit http://www.cachelogic.com.

How It Works

CacheLogic’s Streamsight technology uses advanced deep packet inspection techniques to allow ISPs to gain a true understanding of the applications consuming their network resources. The company also provides additional products for advanced traffic management to reduce the impact of applications and protocols that most dramatically impact network capacity. Through the use of Streamsight, ISPs will benefit from access to detailed network information, including usage patterns, traffic & application trends and historic stats all combined with advanced reporting features. Both Streamsight and the Cachepliance™ products are fully interoperable to allow organizations to deploy an efficient and collaborative architecture for understanding network traffic and controlling its usage. Combined, Streamsight and Cachepliance products enable unprecedented management information and cost savings to the ISP - all without impacting the end-user experience.

"For blueyonder to deliver effective services to our customers we must understand the real nature of the traffic traversing our network. With the rapid growth of applications such as peer-to-peer, this has become an increasingly difficult exercise. The use of deep packet inspection devices, such as CacheLogic's Streamsight 510, allows ISPs to gain true insight into usage patterns and traffic profiles, enabling us to tailor the design of future products," says Fergal Butler, Internet Network Architectural Consultant, Telewest Broadband.

“We are pleased to be able to offer ISPs an integrated solution that offers unparalleled visibility of their network resources. Streamsight delivers the key infrastructure intelligence needed to counteract the network effects brought about by the exponential growth in bandwidth intensive applications such as Peer-to-Peer filesharing and the changing usage patterns of subscribers,” says Andrew Parker, Chief Technical Officer, CacheLogic
