Cablevision Systems certainly finished off last year in good fashion. The New York MSO reported surprisingly strong earnings results for Q4 earlier today, thanks to its surging subscriptions for all three of its core cable services and its pioneering success with discounted triple-play bundles.
Cablevision scored particularly well on the IP telephony front, signing up 130,000 VoIP customers to boost its grand total to 731,000. That keeps it right behind Time Warner Cable as the second biggest cable player in the VoIP business.
The nation's sixth largest MSO also signed up 94,000 cable modem customers in the fall quarter, lifting its customer count near the 1.7 million level. As a result, its industry-leading penetration rate for Optimum Online has climbed to 37.8% of homes passed.
In addition, Cablevision netted 120,000 digital video subscribers in Q4, raising its overall total to nearly 2 million customers. Nearly two-thirds of its basic cable homes have now upgraded to digital packages.
