Cablevision Posts Record Customer Gains

Cablevision Systems became the latest big MSO to join the cable hit parade earlier today, reporting record quarterly increases in overall new subscribers as well as record hikes in broadband and VoIP customers. The nation's sixth largest MSO rounded up a new high of slightly over 112,000 cable modem subscribers in Q1, lifting its total to 1.8 million Optimum Online customers. With the increase, Cablevision raised its industry-leading broadband penetratiion rate to 40.1% of all homes passed in its New York territories. Similarly, Cablevision signed up its biggest bunch of IP telephony customers yet, recruiting nearly 134,000 Optimum Voice subscribers. Thanks to this surge, the MSO boosted its total VoIP customer count to about 865,000, keeping it a strong second behind Time Warner Cable in the MSO rankings. It also increased its VoIP penetration rate to 19.2% of homes passed. On the video side of the business, Cablevision enlisted almost 165,000 new digital cable subscribers, lifting its total past 2.1 million customers. As a result, the company has now converted almost 70% of its basic cable households to digital. Finally, Cablevision netted almost 39,000 new basic cable subscribers, its highest quarterly gain in six years. Overall, the MSO added close to 450,000 new revenue generating units (RGUs) in the quarter, breaking another company record.
