Cablevision Hits 250,000 VoIP Customers

Cablevision Systems is clearly the cable king of voice over IP (VoIP) service so far. The New York MSO announced earlier today that it has now signed up more than 250,000 VoIP subscribers, less than 15 months after launching service on Long Island last fall. Cablevision, which closed the third quarter with 189,000 IP telephony customers, said it's signing up about 1,000 new subscribers a day for its Optimum Voice service. The MSO recently announced that it would not raise the price of Optimum Voice in 2005, keeping it at $34.95 a month. Among the other MSOs, only Time Warner Cable comes close to matching Cablevision's voice prowess. Time Warner, which has been busy rolling out VoIP to all 31 of its divisions this year, has not reported its overall numbers yet. But Time Warner Cable Chairman-CEO Glenn Britt said earlier today that he expects the company to end the year with more than 200,000 VoIP customers. He said the MSO is now signing up 10,000 new voice customers a week.
