Cablevision Systems announced earlier this week that it has boosted its cable modem download speeds to an average of 5 Megabits per second (Mbps), at no additional cost. Cablevision, which prides itself as the major MSO with the fastest downstream speeds in the land, said the average download rate for its Optimum Online service is now 40% faster than it was two years ago. The MSO also said its maximum possible downstream speed is now 10 Mbps.
Cablevision made the move after recent speed hikes by Verizon Communications closed the gap between cable modem and DSL data transmission rates in the greater New York area. The MSO boasted that Optimum Online is now more than triple the speed of DSL. Cablevision also trotted out two TV spots this week to promote its faster data speeds.
