CableLabs Certifies 11 E-MTAs

Alan Breznick

In a surprisingly bustling end-of-summer certification wave, CableLabs ended up approving 15 new tech products late last month, including a whopping total of 11 embedded multimedia terminal adapters (E-MTAs) for cable telephony use. With cable operators lining up to offer voice-over-IP (VoIP) service across the U.S., CableLabs certified 10 of the 11 e-MTAs under both its DOCSIS 2.0 and PacketCable 1.0 specifications. Cisco-Linksys, Motorola, Scientific-Atlanta and Thomson all gained certification of two e-MTAs apiece in the latest equipment testing round. Ambit and Pace Micro Technology each earned certification of one e-MTA. CableLabs certified the last e-MTA, submitted by Arris, under just the DOCSIS 2.0 spec. The flurry of approvals raised the total number of certified e-MTAs to at least 33, including 29 under the DOCSIS 2.0 standard.
