CableLabs Cert Wave Draws No Vendors
For the first time in memory, and probably the first time ever, CableLabs has staged a certification wave for new products and received absolutely no takers. A CableLabs spokesman confirmed that no vendors submitted any DOCSIS or CableHome products for testing during Certification Wave #36 (CW #36), which concluded earlier this month. The almost nonexistent fourth certification wave of the year follows a slow third wave, bustling second wave and sluggish first wave. CableLabs officials chalked up the lack of submissions in CW #36 to the increased number and frequency of testing waves this year. They have said that they expect to see wave activity fluctuate wildly now that they are staging eight product testing rounds a year, twice as many as in years past. But officials expect a strong vendor response to CW #37, which started earlier this month. That's because it covers PacketCable products as well as DOCSIS and CableHome devices. With cable operators focusing on rolling out VoIP services now, vendors are scrambling to produce new voice-related gear.
