Establishes network to advance the development of Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Fiber-to-the-Building (FTTB) systems

SAN DIEGO -- Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (Pink Sheets: VTSS - News) continues to increase its presence in the rapidly expanding Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Fiber-to-the-Building (FTTB) markets by establishing a network of leading technology companies to collectively address and advance development of next-generation, end-to-end, passive optical networking (PON) systems. The members of the FTTx Ecosystem will apply their respective architectural expertise to the deployment of 10G and 40G PON in access networks that deliver triple play services for high-speed data, voice, and video transmissions. This collective effort will focus on standards compliance, backward compatibility, and a smooth upgrade path from existing PON networks.

FTTx Ecosystem Participants

The initial participants of the FTTx Ecosystem include Vitesse, Teknovus, Emcore, and Anritsu. Each company offers specific PON expertise and is well underway with their contribution to making next-generation wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and high-speed PON-based networks a reality.

Vitesse is uniquely positioned to support the migration to new 10G and 40G WDM systems with a complete line of industry leading burst and continuous mode capable 10G laser drivers, transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs), SerDes, and parallel array devices. In addition to this new set of physical medium dependent devices (PMDs) and physical layer transceivers, Vitesse is providing access to advanced technology and demonstration vehicles to ecosystem participants. The Company will also provide feedback to standards bodies focused on PON deployment and adoption.

Teknovus has demonstrated triple-rate (10/100/1000) PON media access controllers (MACs) with support for 10 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, and 1.25 Gbps downstream data rates as well as 1.25 Gbps and 10 Gbps upstream data rates, enabling carriers to reduce costs by supporting coexistence of 1.25 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, and 10 Gbps ONUs within a single fiber plant. The physical coding layer and multipoint MAC control layer are central to the system since new FTTx deployments will require reuse and extension of existing PON technologies for the higher layers.

“Working with Vitesse burst mode capable SerDes, Teknovus has been able to validate its Turbo-XPON product line in the industry’s highest performance 10G symmetrical EPON solution. We are already demonstrating this complete system solution to our customers, who are under extreme pressure to field a proven 10G-EPON system as quickly as possible,” said Robin Grindley, director of product line management for Teknovus.

Our 10G TOSA and ROSA have proven to work flawlessly with Vitesse’s 10G-PON burst mode driver chipset, resulting in the industry’s first 10G-PON market solution,” said Chris Wiggins, director of product line management for Emcore.
