As Microsoft once memorably declared, "Welcome to the Social."

Liberty Puerto Rico, a subsidiary of Liberty Global Inc. (Nasdaq: LBTY), is rolling out a new cloud-based user interface that highlights trending content based on real-time audience data. Called Social Content Navigator, the UI creates a mosaic of eight video streams determined by programs that are popular in particular communities and relevant to an individual's personal interests. The guide relies on web-based metadata and continuously updates channel rankings to maintain its line-up of popular programming.

Social Content Navigator is powered by the ActiveVideo CloudTV platform, which renders the HTML5 interface as a single video stream. Although the guide supports a display of eight live video channels, it requires only one tuner in a consumer's set-top. The technology will allow Liberty to update even legacy set-top boxes with the new cloud-based UI.

Say hello to the Social Content Navigator. But will there be an Anti-Social one?

"The cloud is enabling cable system operators to quickly and cost-effectively reinvent services to meet the expectations of consumers," said Naji Khoury, president and CEO for Liberty Puerto Rico. "CloudTV is playing an essential role in our ability to combine unprecedented scale and service velocity in our deployment of new functionality, such as the Social Content Navigator."

ActiveVideo has built an impressive customer list for its CloudTV platform. In the US, these include Cablevision Systems Corp. (NYSE: CVC) and Charter Communications Inc. , as well as Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), which has been running a small trial for some time in Chattanooga, Tenn. Outside of the US, ActiveVideo counts Ziggo B.V. and Deutsche Telekom AG (NYSE: DT) among its customers. (See ActiveVideo Tightens Its Cable Ties and Deutsche Telekom Tests Set-Top Virtualization.)

Liberty Puerto Rico said it expects to deploy the Social Content Navigator UI to all of its 250,000 video customers by the end of this year. Liberty and ActiveVideo will showcase the new guide at The Cable Show next week in Los Angeles.

TV with Benefits
Next up would be to recreate entirely the experience of watching TV with a group of people.

I mean, not that you don't have any friends (I do...a few...I think...) but wouldn't it be great to come home, and see what everyone else is watching, right now, in real time, and then hang out with some of them, and interact on the screen or with live social media.   To actually come into other peoples living rooms...and vice versa?

Like ok for the Sunday football game, you've got people.  But how about the the Wednesday night regular season basketball game?

Or say an episode of "The Following" showing at the scheduled network time.  Don't you want to have some people who you can ask "hey, is that the guy from before...or is that that a new guy?"   You can even make fun of the commercials together...and that would be a marketing persons dream come true!

Re: TV with Benefits
@Jabailo, after reading this interesting piece and coupling that with the advances being made in the field of IoT devices, I believe your dream (and definitely mine too; I liked how you painted it) could be coming true much sooner than you think. If you think of your TV and your friends as interconnected IoT devices then there is no limit to the things you can do together. Couple that with a Smartphone and some third party app like Skype and you are all set.
