IPTV Activity Aplenty

6:30 PM -- There’s IPTV news, and lots of it. With National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) in full swing, news was sure to come, but it appears to be more than just press release fodder.
AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) added 284,000 IPTV subscribers in 1Q09, representing a year-over-year growth rate of 92 percent. Both Tandberg Television and Minerva Networks Inc. have publicly stated that both their 4Q08 and 1Q09 sales were much better than expected. Tandberg cited its recent customer win of North State Communications of North Carolina as an example.
Microsoft announced it served nearly 3 million IPTV subscribers with Mediaroom worldwide, double the amount from a year ago. Cisco and Avail Media announced their partnership, which hopes to lock up the outsourced end-to-end IPTV network business.
It’s somewhat of a turnaround from 2008, when IPTV activity seemed to be losing some steam. Granted it’s early, but given the poor economic conditions, recent activity suggests 2009 may witness some form of IPTV resurgence.
— Bernardin Arnason, Managing Partner, Pivot Group , and Chairman, TelcoTV 2008
