IBC Curtain Call

8:35 AM -- AMSTERDAM -- IBC2008 -- Many tradeshows are enough to drive visitors to drink (or worse), so dull are they, and this year's IBC looked little different last Thursday. (See IBC Day 1: WIP.)

The dreadful weather and endless traffic holdups didn't help the mood either.

But then the show floor opened Friday lunchtime and things got way more interesting, with plenty of folk turning out for the 9 a.m. door opening on Saturday morning (the exhibition runs Friday to Tuesday). (See IBC Day 2: Square Eyes.)

Was that because pretty much everything at the show was to do with the entertainment world (albeit from a technology standpoint)?

Well, it sure helped, but there was a buzz about the show, despite its enormous size (about 1,300 exhibitors in 12 halls), with plenty of interest from some of telco TV's big-name players. It was notable, too, that the IPTV Zone, which housed more than 50 equipment and applications specialists, attracted a constant flow of visitors. While EuroBlog bid Amsterdam farewell on Saturday, the show continued through the weekend and into this week, with Sunday evening's presentation by DreamWorks SKG CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg, during which he talked about the impact of 3D digital production, a highlight. Content management and delivery is going to be a key skill for any service provider looking to be more than a utility player in the near future, so the kind of developments highlighted during the past week in the Dutch capital are of increasing relevance to the world's telecom operators.

Much more than many other industry tradeshows, IBC is an event worth watching and noting.
