HD No Fix for India's DTH

11:20 AM -- High costs mean high definition won't save India's infant Direct-to-Home television (DTH) market from the effects of the economic downturn, which has slowed growth in the first quarter by 35 percent.

Sun Direct, one of India's six major DTH companies, launched HD earlier this month and is aiming to secure a niche market now, in advance of widespread takeup in the future.

However, equipment costs up to five times higher than standard DTH equipment mean that HD will struggle to get anything but the very top end of the market. Tata Sky is therefore staying away from HD until prices come down.
