HD Envy

4:00 PM –- And now, a stunning detail about HDTV...

I was prepared to report today that high-definition video services like MovieBeam were a good idea, but would ultimately only leave you wanting more. Why buy a service which provides just movies in HD? For about the same price, wouldn't you rather buy something like DISH Network's HD package and get 20-something HD channels AND the ability to watch HD movies?

But then I actually did buy DISH's HD package and found out about an unexpected twist to the problem of entertainment service delivery -- and why MovieBeam might have a fighting chance.

The buzz about HD services is all over the place and DISH provider EchoStar Satellite LLC hasn't been shy about marketing its new HD DVR tuner. But when I called and ordered my service, I was informed that DISH will mail me the shiny new tuner, and my friendly neighborhood installer will show up to my house sometime between noon and 5 p.m.

On April 2.

That's in 45 days.

Forty. Five. Days.

Isn't that how long it used to take to get a T-1 line? Is it possible Project Lightspeed will have made it to my 'hood by the time my DISH installer shows up?

Anyway, this, I'm sure, is fabulous news for the cable companies. I quit my cable company when it priced its services out of my budget. But now I may go back because, pricing aside, I do remember this about cable: When I called, they came.

So I may call them again. I guess I have forty-five days to think it over.

Any commentary on the screen artifact that is showing up after 1 year of service life on Sony HD TVs?

Which raises the question: Did anyone ever think they'd have a friggin' software bug in a TV?

No there is a hardware issue which screws up the screens. It puts a rather large artifact on the screen permanently.

Or rather large, anyway.

Had no idea. Quite a bummer to find after dropping a couple grand on a TV, though. I'll ask Sony to see what they say.
