After a false start last week, DirecTV launched 21 new hi-def nets on Wednesday morning

HD-Day Arrives

Following a false start last week that left some satellite TV subs disappointed, DirecTV Group Inc. (NYSE: DTV) made good this morning on the launch of 21 additional high-definition channels.

The newly-added channels, which apply some pressure on cable and telco TV providers to beef up their hi-def offerings as well, are:

  • A&E HD

  • Animal Planet HD

  • Big Ten Network HD

  • CNN HD

  • Discovery Channel HD

  • The History Channel HD

  • TLC (The Learning Channel) HD

  • The Movie Channel HD

  • NFL Network HD

  • The Science Channel HD

  • Showtime Too HD

  • Showtime West HD

  • Smithsonian Channel HD

  • Starz Comedy HD

  • Starz HD East

  • Starz Edge HD

  • Starz HD West

  • Starz Kids & Family

  • TBS HD

  • The Weather Channel HD

  • Versus/Golf Channel (shared)



On the Web, DirecTV lists another 18 hi-def channels expected by October, including Bravo HD, Cartoon Network HD, Cinemax HD East & West, Food Network HD, Fox Business, FX HD, HGTV HD, NBA TV HD, National Geographic Channel HD, SciFi HD, and USA HD, among others.

By year's end, DirecTV plans to add nine more: bio.HD, CMT HD, MTV HD, Nick HD, Spike HD, VH1 HD, CSTV HD, Tennis Channel HD, and another called The 101.

According to the site, DirecTV hopes to have "up to 100" HD channels by the end of 2007.
