Are Telcos Missing the Boat With Broadband Video?
2:20 PM -- CHICAGO -- Supercomm 2009 -- Here at Supercomm, video services and video content are a recurring theme in many sessions.
Tom Rogers, CEO of TiVo Inc. (Nasdaq: TIVO), shared some interesting thoughts regarding telcos' role (or lack thereof) in the ongoing move to content delivered via the Internet, or over-the-top video. Rogers believes that all video content will make it to the Web -- it’s just a matter of when. He also believes telcos are standing on the sidelines and observing the trend, rather than getting on board and controlling their own destiny. So much so, he drew a parallel with the newspaper industry, suggesting telcos may be making some of the same kinds of mistakes newspapers have with the Internet.
Pretty provocative statements to a room full of telcos. Everyone knows broadband video is an important trend. It’s also easy for a device maker with a pretty clear path for leveraging broadband video to point fingers at service providers for "missing the boat." The challenge becomes translating provocation into business reality.
— Bernardin Arnason, Managing Partner, Pivot Group , and Chairman, TelcoTV 2009
