AlcaLu's Next CEO?

Phil Harvey
5/1/2008

5:00 AM -- Following Ray's excellent story about the likelihood of management changes at AlcaLu, a source contacted me and threw out another name in the Great AlcaLu CEO Hunt.

The source says to consider Hubert de Pesquidoux as a likely contender.

Why? The source says he's the most senior Alcatel exec left standing, he's French, and he's "loved by all", meaning he's popular both inside the company, as well as with customers in Europe and the U.S.

Agreed, from what I know of him. I know he's well traveled, too. I met him once at a media event staged in AlcaLu's Plano, Texas, offices. He was running Alcatel North America then. Now he's the CFO and has charge of AlcaLu's entire enterprise business.

Worked here and there? Check. Financial background? Check. French-born and Paris educated? Check. What am I missing here?

Oh, one thing. Why not an outsider to increase the chances of a fresh perspective?

Your all bang on the money. Alcalu is a classic example of western management arrogance & incompetence personified.

Not only are do they appear to have lost key innovations, have too many staff but they are run by what can only be desribed as muppets.

How you merge to companies with that much history, tech and talent and then balls it up like they have is beyond me! You have to work hard to do it!

The platforms are still competent but they are not distinctive enough & their cost base is prohibitively high.

All I can say is good luck to all working there.

While the French may not have a reputation for the best "out of the box" thinking, or as dynamic change artists, the American that currently holds the spot at AlcaLu hasn't exactly draped herself in glory in that regard. In fact, I would think that just about anyone else would be better than what is there now.

"de" in this case generally means "of" - this can be "Son of" or "of <geographical reference="">". "Son of" can also be found in the use of "fitz" or "fils". "De" is general used in the geographical context.

It may be that a large number of families to follow this convention are descendents of nobility and those who governed these geographical areas. If this is true, it is highly diluted by now.

Perfect for the job - now all you need to do is start the search for his successor who is able to start in 2 years from now.

ps - google is a wonderful thing</geographical>

A Frenchman running AlcaLU's how socialistic is that. If AlcaLu is to turn around then get someone with a 'fighting spirit' to change the company and make it compete.

A Frenchman come on get real !

Hubert is as likely as any other. He is FRENCH, has made the global rounds, and has to be better than Pat F&^king Russo!

My understanding is that many French with "De" prior to the rest of their name are descendants of French Royalty, but I am not certain. Anyone else know? I am too lazy to Google it.

No turnaround experience.

They need a person to clean house and change culture in order to restore customer confidence. That is a different breed. And I really doubt the current board has the balls to pick someone like that.

Is there a book called Crappy to Not-quite-as-crappy? That would be more applicable.

"Why not an outsider..." as New CEO?

According to Jim Collins author of "Good to Great" most companies that make the transition do so with leadership from the inside not outside.

Not that it can't be done.

All that said, I guess this pre-supposes that AlcaLu is a Good company?

Cheers,
