Scientific-Atlanta's new auto broadcast and select VOD architecture reduces on-demand CapEx/OpEx

ORLANDO, Fla. -- SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2004 -- Scientific-Atlanta's new 10 Gbps video-on-demand (VOD) transport cards for the Prisma IP(TM) multi-service digital transport platform now support the automation delivered by tunable transmit/receive optics to enable a new Automated Broadcast and Select architecture developed by Scientific-Atlanta. The Automated Broadcast and Select architecture allows operators to scale their networks to up to 100 wavelengths on a single fiber without the use of Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) filters. The new VOD tunable optics join several other bandwidth enhancement solutions now available to cable operators from Scientific-Atlanta.

Automated Broadcast and Select is an innovative approach to VOD network scalability that delivers a streamlined, efficient solution for dynamically tuning the receivers to any wavelength with one device. This can help lower operating costs and support more efficient configuration of optical networks on demand. The architecture optimizes the unidirectional nature of VOD networking to efficiently provide the required components needed to deliver on-demand services and, combined with Scientific-Atlanta® Prisma IP Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) technology, scales data traffic independently from video traffic.

The key element of the Automated Broadcast and Select architecture is the card's tunable receiver, developed jointly by Scientific-Atlanta and iolon, Inc. The concept is similar to Radio Frequency technology used in broadcast radio and TV - all the channels are available, and the receiver tunes to the desired channel to be received.
