SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Passavé, the leading provider of Ethernet passive optical networking (EPON) semiconductors for fiber to the home (FTTH), today announced availability of the industry’s only truly programmable dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) engine along with its new Plato DBA algorithm.

The need for programmable DBA is directly linked to the changing nature of Internet applications. DBA algorithms are optimized for different traffic patterns and applications. Passavé’s programmable DBA engine provides carriers with the only option for high-performance DBA that does not require forklift network upgrades for algorithm changes. Through Passavé’s programmable DBA, carriers adapt to changing network usage and customer applications, thereby protecting their investments in FTTH for years to come.

The Plato algorithm improves upstream utilization, reduces upstream delay and delivers unrivaled quality of service, supporting triple-play applications as well as legacy time division multiplexing (TDM) traffic emulation over advanced Gigabit EPON systems. The programmable DBA engine comes with all Passavé devices, enabling carriers who already have Passavé-based EPONs to utilize the Plato algorithm immediately.

Passavé’s programmable DBA engine is already in field deployments, including the world’s fastest-growing EPON market—Japan. Exemplifying Passavé’s ever-increasing market share and the momentum FTTH and EPON is gaining, Passavé reached another major milestone in shipment of more than two million ports.

“Carriers face a constant challenge in building networks flexible enough to meet current and future application requirements," said Michael Howard, cofounder and principal of Infonetics Research, an international market research firm. "Passavé's approach to DBA, with its emphasis on field programmability and performance, can reduce carrier costs while providing support for applications which have yet to be defined, thereby helping to protect their investments in FTTH."
