UltraViolet to Open its Rights Locker in Mid-2011

Welcome to a brief summary of International CES tidbits and other headlines with cable implications:

  • After getting major studios and service providers to settle on a brand and logo for their digital rights locker, UltraViolet says it’ll launch in mid-2011. Among examples of how this will work, consumers who buy a DVD at Best Buy will be able to access the same title on cable video-on-demand (VoD). (See Consortium Labels Its TV Everywhere Locker.)

  • If NBC Universal is already premiering TV series on Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL)'s iPad, imagine what it'll do once it hooks up with Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK)’s Xfinity TV app. (See Comcast to Stream TV to iPads, Android Tablets .)

  • Still no carriage deals in place for the 3-D network from Discovery Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: DISCA, DISCB, DISCK), Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) and IMAX, but the companies have officially settled on 3net as the brand that they’ll be shopping to cable MSOs and other video service providers. (See Discovery Prez: New 3D Net Will Need 6MHz .)

  • After hitting some glitches with its E-911 system, Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE: TWC) held a conference call with two dozen 911 directors across New York State. (See FCC Seeks Update of 911.)

  • Suddenlink Communications subscribers can now watch Chicken Little, Jonas Brothers and several other 3-D movies on demand. (See Suddenlink Triples VoD Menu.)

  • Sony chief Howard Stringer blames sluggish sales of 3DTVs on the "declining middle class in America," and will double down on Sony's 3DTV efforts. "You don't want to be the last. I don't think short-term [sales] numbers say anything about anything except the nature of the economy and what people can afford," the Sony chief told USA Today. Steve:

Good overview from the sessions. Out here on the floor it's back-to-back attendees and very tough to walk through the halls. The word is that it may be up to 130,000 this year.
