Rumor: Cisco Wanted VUDU

Craig Matsumoto

Smiley-faced retailer Wal-Mart is acquiring VUDU Inc. , the also-ran online video provider, the two companies announced Monday.

Peter Kafka, writing for The Wall Street Journal's "All Things D" blog, notes the price might be as high as $100 million, well beyond what anyone expected.

Here's the interesting telecom part: Kafka has heard the price went that high because VUDU has some special video compression technology, special enough to attract multiple bidders -- possibly including Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO).

That's still unconfirmed, but if true, it would suggest VUDU has something truly special under the covers. If it's really good stuff, maybe Wal-Mart could create a subsidiary to start licensing out technology...
