Cable Tech

Northern Exposure for Ex-CableLabs Chief

12:45 PM -- Dr. Richard Green, the former president and CEO of CableLabs , is "retired," but certainly not out to pasture. He's still got a hand in the cable game, most recently as a newly elected board member of Canadian MSO Shaw Communications Inc. (See CableLabs Chief Bows Out.)

Guess I missed that one, but thankfully I was awake enough this morning to notice this ad/announcement in the business section of The Denver Post, tucked away on page 7B:

I'm not entirely sure why Shaw would go to the trouble of running this ad in the Denver market, unless it was just to let the local business community know that one of its own (CableLabs and Green are big in the Denver/Boulder-area tech scene) was still making key contributions on the broadband front and, generally, staying pretty busy.

"We believe Dr. Green's vast experience and knowledge of the Cable Industry will provide valuable insight and direction," the announcement reads.

Green's election to the Shaw board is also an indication that the transition period is over, roughly a year after Dr. Paul Liao was named as the successor to Green, who served as first head of CableLabs, and held the spot for about 20 years. (See Panasonic's Liao Is New CableLabs CEO.)

Green also sits on the boards of two cable entities headquartered just south of Denver -- Liberty Global Inc. (Nasdaq: LBTY) and Jones/NCTI Inc. -- and Space Science Institute, which is based in Boulder, but may look like Mars to certain people.
