SINGAPORE -- As the consumer demand for broadband services increases, Nokia has launched ADSL 2+ at the Nokia Connection event in Singapore, June 14-15.

Essentially an upgrade to traditional ADSL technologies, ADSL 2+ brings the possibility of multi-megabit bandwidth and greater reach for broadband services, meaning easy deployment and expansion into rural areas, where coverage is low.

Standardised by the ITU last year, ADSL 2+ gives a new lease of life to existing broadband connections. The Nokia ADSL 2+ solution will be commercially available for broadband operators during the second half of 2004, and selected trials are starting now.

The combination of the Nokia D500 IP DSLAM and ADSL2+ forms a powerful and flexible solution for operators. The new line cards will be forwards and backwards compatible with existing technologies, allowing for the smooth introduction of bundles of services to gain greater end-user appeal and reduce churn. With up to 24 Megabit connections possible, mass-market applications such as video on demand, premium access and networked gaming are improved tremendously. Greater reach will also reduce the need for remote sites bringing further savings. A smooth introduction of ADSL2+ allows operators to standardise their network engineering, reduce spares holding and reduce training requirements.
