Musical Chairs

11:50 AM -- The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) has been searching for a new program committee chairman for this year's Cable-Tec Expo ever since the guy who was originally tagged to do it, Cox Communications Inc. CTO and EVP Scott Hatfield, resigned. (See Cox CTO Resigns .)

It turns out the Society didn't have to look very far to find a replacement. In fact, it came out of the same MSO, with Cox SVP of technology Jay Rolls stepping up to take over those duties. (See SCTE Appoints 2010 Expo Chair Replacement.)

Some of the legwork tied to the programming and content of the show has no doubt been done, but time is of the essence. Cable-Tec Expo makes its return to New Orleans this fall, running from Oct. 20-22.

Rolls, you may not know, joined Cox in 1995 as director of multimedia technology and was promoted to VP of data engineering in 2001 and VP of telephone and data engineering in 2003. He also served as VP of networking engineering at [email protected], the former cross-MSO high-speed Internet joint venture that was dissolved several years ago.

Light Reading Cable caught up with Rolls in May at The Cable Show to discuss the industry's interest in IP video and a new breed of do-it-all broadband gateway devices. Here's what he had to say:
