Arris Brings SeaWell Into the Fold

Arris is adding another piece to its already bulging IP video portfolio.

Arris Group Inc. (Nasdaq: ARRS) announced it has acquired SeaWell Networks Inc. for its adaptive bit-rate (ABR) technology and for SeaWell's suite of offerings, including IP video, multiscreen video, and ad insertion solutions. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but Arris made a point in the press release of declaring that it will bring SeaWell talent on board in the deal, along with its technology. SeaWell is based in Mississauga, Ontario, just west of Toronto.

This isn't the first time Arris has done business with SeaWell. In October, the two companies announced a joint multiscreen advertising solution combining SeaWell's Spectrum IP session delivery controller technology with Arris's SkyVision ad insertion platform. That offering includes: format repackaging; per-session content management and analytics; zone-based, localized, and targeted ad insertion; blackout management and program substitution; and support for all major ABR protocols. The acquisition of SeaWell comes just one year after Arris swallowed up the much larger Motorola Home and reorganized its business into three operating units: a network and cloud division, a customer premises equipment group, and a strategy and converged services unit. SeaWell will join the network and cloud business. (See Arris Shows Off New Mojo.)

Arris chairman and CEO Bob Stanzione said in the news announcement, "This acquisition further positions Arris to transform IP video delivery… from content creation to consumption... Combining our solutions, technologists, and roadmaps promises to accelerate the delivery of the personalized TV and advertising solutions that service providers need and their consumers crave."
