LR Picks Best New Services

Massive changes are rocking the telecom, cable, and mobile communications worlds, and it's about time somebody put out a scorecard to keep tabs on it all. Give a drum roll and fanfare, then, to the newest Light Reading list, the Top Ten Best New Services.

What makes a top 10 service? We're not talking about a simple broadband connection or the ability to put chickens on the Web. Not even subservient chickens. We mean something big and bold -- something that's going to create a new mass market, or change the way we consume TV or information.

To qualify, services had to be available now, so put away all your grand Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) conspiracy theories. The services making this list had to be less than six months old -- still young, but with enough time to build a groundswell.

BT Group plc (NYSE: BT; London: BTA), Cingular Wireless , and Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO) all made the list, as did one of the startups backed by The Walt Disney Co. We've got some smaller names as well. And the list touches on a wide swath of trends: 3G wireless, lots of fixed/mobile convergence, business VPLS, and clever TV/cable tricks for the home (yes, Sling Media Inc. is one of them).

Like all Top 10 lists, this one's transitory and not necessarily perfect. Let us know what you'd change. Visit the list now and add your comments to the message board -- or send your thoughts to [email protected].
