Telkom South Africa selects LightPointe FSO equipment, though terms of the agreement and size of the deployment were not disclosed

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- LightPointe, an innovator, designer and manufacturer of carrier-class optical transmission equipment using Free-Space Optics (FSO) technology, today announced it has been successful with its distribution partner, Spescom Telecommunications (Pty) Ltd., in a bid to be the sole vendor in providing FSO solutions to the incumbent telecom carrier of South Africa, Telkom South Africa (SA).Terms of the agreement and size of eventual Free-Space Optics deployment were not disclosed. “The success of our bid gives both LightPointe and Spescom a significant win in a region where the need for FSO is growing substantially,” said Christian L. Rook, Managing Director of LightPointe Europe GmbH. “The bid itself reconfirms the demand for FSO by major telecom carriers who want the freedom to deploy high-bandwidth services without trenching streets or securing spectrum licenses.”According to Spescom, Telkom SA will be utilizing LightPointe FSO products in the metro access area of their network, offering fast and inexpensive broadband solutions to customers that will complement Telkom’s existing fiber-optic cable network.LightPointe Communications Inc.
