FREMONT, Calif. -- Ikanos Communications, developer of Smart Silicon for Profitable Broadband™, announced today shipments for its SmartLeapTM, programmable VDSL-DMT chipsets have exceeded one million ports since volume production began less than one year ago.

Ikanos reports an increase in global sales of more than 200 percent since the ANSI T1E1.4 Working Group and the IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) Task Force named Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT) as the only line-coding standard for Very-High-Bit-Rate Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) technology in June of this year for North America and worldwide deployments. In both standards bodies, an overwhelming majority of members selected DMT as the standard.

“Since the adoption of DMT as the line coding standard by ANSI and IEEE, carriers are no longer in a holding pattern,” said Richard Sekar, vice president of marketing for Ikanos Communications. “As predicted, the single standard has greatly accelerated the deployment of triple-play voice, data and video services. We’ve seen a steep growth curve as carriers accelerate deployment schedules in the Pacific Rim and Europe.”

Ikanos has established strong customer relationships with top equipment vendors around the world. Customer wins announced to date include Sumitomo Electric Industries (Japan), NEC (Japan), Hyundai Networks (Korea), ZyXEL (Taiwan), Millinet (Korea), Marconi (Europe), Woojyun Systec (Korea), and Dasan Networks (Korea), where major broadband deployments are under way.

Designed to Help Vendors Best Capitalize on the Demand for Broadband At speeds of 150 Mbps, and distances up to 13,000 ft. over a single copper loop, the Ikanos VDSL-DMT chipset weighs in with the industry’s highest rates, ranges and quality of service (QoS). The strength of Ikanos’ VDSL-DMT technology was demonstrated repeatedly at The VDSL Olympics in a highly publicized face-off against Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM).

Only Ikanos’ single-chip architecture provides programmable support for ADSL-DMT, VDSL-DMT, and EFM in one high-performance chipset. Suppliers can develop one integrated line card that supports multiple worldwide standards and offers a full suite of high-speed services and programmatically adapt it to any market. Key applications of interest among Ikanos’ current customers include Fiber to the Premises/Home (FTTP/FTTH) extension over copper, and triple-play services for Multi-Tenant/Multi-Dwelling Unit (MxU) and Central Office/Remote Terminal (CO/RT) markets. The highly integrated architecture allows Ikanos to offer industry-leading port density and enables the design of smaller, simpler products with fewer chip counts. Further, Ikanos provides the only on-chip QoS to ensure superior performance guarantees of the highest-quality video applications.
