Google Hypometer

4:45 PM -- Google has one of these interesting new "beta" applications that seems to excel in tracking the hype cycle of certain buzzwords. It's called Google Trends.

In theory, this tracks news developments in certain product areas. In practice, however, I think it tracks mostly the number of press releases that have been issued on a certain topic. In an experiment to find out which hype is growing or waning, I typed in some common terms to see what happens, and the results are quite revealing:

Think something's become overpromoted? Go ahead -- pick your own.

re: Google Hypometer Looks like IPTV is on a meteoric rise. And the epicenter of IPTV search activity? You guessed it -- Des Moines, Iowa USA -- global high-tech hotbed in America's heartland. Maybe a Hawkeye SBC Lightspeed project manager is diligently searching for the latest IPTV trends?

re: Google Hypometer Yeah I know it's a different state, but it's just fun to say.

Whilst we gufaw at Middle America and SBC the region and country trends in the Googlepedia is a serious indicator that the folks over in Asia are breathing down our neck!

USA ended up 9th with all the others above in Asia.

So the salient question as it pertains to IPTV, how much more viable is it for the rest of the world?
