SOPHIA-ANTIPOLIS, France -- DSL technology, which offers enormous performance opportunities for Internet access over traditional telephone lines, has been put to the test this week. The first joint Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) interoperability testing event organized by DSL Forum and the PlugtestsTM Service of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) was hosted by CETECOM ICT in Saarbrücken, Germany, from 14-18 October 2002. The event was well attended, attracting 36 companies from North America, Europe and Asia. The event offered an opportunity for engineers from different companies to bring their products and prototypes into a commercially secure environment to connect together and check whether or not they would interoperate. Testing was targeted specifically at implementations relating to DSL deployment in Europe. A complex testing configuration was established, and the new ETSI standards on splitters, ADSL (Asymmetric DSL) and SDSL/SHDSL (Symmetric single-pair DSL), and the new DSL Forum Technical Report TR-37 on automated configuration were included in the tests. The results obtained will provide feedback to the DSL standards development process, in which ETSI is particularly active. This event has been supported by the European Commission (EC) under its eEurope Initiative, which aims to bring everyone in Europe on-line as quickly as possible. The EC has identified affordable, high-speed Internet access as a crucial element in ensuring the inclusion of all citizens in the Information Society, and DSL offers enormous potential for high-functioning, fast Internet access.European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI)
