Windy City Wideband

2:00 PM -- Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK) has completed its deployment of Docsis 3.0 in Chicagoland (and northwest Indiana), starting off with a 50 Mbit/s downstream by 10 Mbit/s upstream tier that will put some added pressure on RCN Corp. and AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) U-verse.

AT&T offers U-verse largely in the Chicago suburbs at this point, while RCN has about a quarter of the city wired up. RCN has identified New York City as its first Docsis 3.0 site, with a launch expected by late September or early October. The competitive overbuilder expects to introduce wideband in its other markets, including Chicago, in subsequent quarters. (See Cable Catchup .)

Comcast began the wideband deployment in Chicago late last year and recently accelerated its Docsis 3.0 plumbing plan, expecting now to have the tech deployed in 80 percent of its plant by the end of this year. (See Comcast Speeds Up '09 Wideband Goal .)

Next to Extreme 50, Comcast's next best tier is Ultra, a non-wideband service that pumps out 22 Mbit/s down by 5 Mbit/s up.
