RCN Gets Docsis 3.0 Ball Rolling

5:45 PM -- RCN Corp. has moved to the launch phase of its Docsis 3.0 deployment, expecting to begin marketing wideband services to residential and biz customers in New York, Boston, and Lehigh Valley, Pa., during the fourth quarter. And more is on tap for next year.

"We expect to complete the majority of our remaining rollout in 2010," RCN CFO Michael Sicoli said on Tuesday's earnings call. So Chicago and Washington, D.C., where RCN competes with Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK), are next in line.

But RCN's placing a Docsis 3.0 emphasis on small and mid-sized business customers in the early going. On Monday, the competitive cable overbuilder said it will tap Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) modems and cable modem termination system (CMTSs) to deliver three wideband tiers to SMBs: 20 Mbit/s down by 5 Mbit/s up; 40 Mbit/s down by 5 Mbit/s up; and 60 Mbit/s down by 10 Mbit/s up.

Depending on the service commitment (one year or two), pricing on the biz tiers will be in the range of $59.99 to $199.99 per month. (See RCN Brings Docsis 3.0 to SMBs and RCN Posts Q3.)
