SINGAPORE -- DenseLight Semiconductors Private Limited("DenseLight") announces the availability of GPON transceivers for the ONU side in Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON).

This is the world's first commercially available ITU-T G.984 compliant GPON transceiver capable of achieving 2.5Gbps downstream & 1.25Gbps (burst mode) upstream transmissions. It is designed to operate at the Optical Network Unit (ONU) side, supporting FTTB/C/Cab (fiber to thebuilding/curb/cabinet) network configurations. For GPON system makers and service operators, the product offers exciting first-to-market possibilities to bring gigabit-grade broadband services in small to large-scale optical fiber access network deployments around the world.

DenseLight's GPON-ONU transceiver is delivered in a standard 2x9 package. What are notable are the complete implementations of the G.984 physical media dependent (PMD) specifications in the transceiver. For instance, the G.984 defined power-leveling function has been implemented to enable a reliable burst mode operation between the ONU and the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) side operating in a Class B optical distribution network (ODN) environment. Further more, DenseLight has realized very fast burst on and off transient times (< 8ns) through advanced high-speed circuit technology to meet the stringent requirements of the GPON system specifications.

DenseLight's GPON transceiver has proven engineering readiness and is already in deployment with a leading GPON system maker. Designated as the DTG-1031 series, DenseLight's GPON-ONU transceiver is in sampling status for worldwide customers now.

DenseLight's dual competency in photonics & high-speed electronics positions the company to be a capable partner to support production-ready GPON-ONU reference designs with their GPON transceiver products. The company's GPON transceiver roadmap anticipates

  • Single fiber output (in Q1 2005)

  • Finer transceiver control features with robust firmware

  • Customer defined options and interfaces

"The grand challenge in any high performance optical transceivers is the exact melding of photonics and high speed electronics. But beyond the engineering aspects, DenseLight focuses on the post manufacturing competencies such as our complete qualification program to allow ship-to-stock for our customers. We want to ensure original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to achieve production-ready and cost-effective solutions so that we can be the best supplier of GPON solutions not just components", said DenseLight's CEO, Dr Yee-Loy Lam.
