ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- CityNet Telecommunications, the worldleader and pioneer in last-mile broadband infrastructure, announced todaythe completion of the world’s first dark-fiber, all-optical network, bridging the “last-mile” in the City of Albuquerque.A breakthrough in telecommunications and high-speed network access, thecompletion of CityNet’s landmark project gives more than 1,000 businesstenants in 21 high-rise buildings simultaneous access to a state-of-the-art,all-fiber optical broadband network. No company has ever built a last-milenetwork that provides access to so many buildings at once, all through aunique pathway – the city’s sewer system. CityNet expects to link six morebuildings onto the Albuquerque network within a few months.“The so-called ‘last-mile’ divide has been crippling the growth ofbroadband, and ultimately creating a bottleneck that has slowed our overallinformation services economy,” said Robert Berger, Chairman & CEO of theSilver Spring, Maryland-based CityNet. “Completing the last-mile of theall-optical network has been the ‘Holy Grail’ of telecom for almost 20years. Other companies have built all the other pieces of the network. They’ve interconnected our continents, countries and cities. But once at thegates of the city, where are the on and off-ramps to that broadbandsuperhighway? They don’t exist. The networks have been highways to nowhere.Until now.”CityNet Telecommunications Inc.
