Broadcom becomes the primary supplier of chips for Motorola's DOCSIS 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0-based SURFboard cable modems through 2003

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM - News), the leading provider of integrated circuits enabling broadband communications, extended its supply agreement with cable modem market leader, Motorola (NYSE: MOT - News), to be the primary supplier of chips for Motorola's DOCSIS(TM) 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0-based SURFboard® cable modems through 2003. Broadcom's high-performance cable modem chips provide the enabling technology for two-way, high-speed Internet access over cable.According to InStat/MDR, an independent market research firm, the worldwide cable modem market is expected to grow to over 20 million subscribers by 2003. Currently, Motorola's Broadband Communication Sector is the leading provider of cable modems, having shipped over 10 million modems to date. The company's cable modems are currently available at over 2,000 retail outlets throughout the United States, including Circuit City, Best Buy, and Microcenter, making Motorola's SURFboard line the industry's broadest retail cable modem offerings."We are excited about expanding our strategic partnership with the industry's leading cable modem manufacturer, Motorola," said Tim Lindenfelser, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Broadband Communications Business Unit.
