BellSouth Extends LD Reach
ATLANTA -- BellSouth (NYSE: BLS - News) today is celebrating its one year anniversary marking the debut of its long distance service offering in Georgia and Louisiana. In May 2002, BellSouth was granted FCC approval to offer the service for the first time in its region. By the end of year, the company became the first regional Bell operating company to offer long distance to its entire service area.
The company met the one-year milestone with more than 1.9 million customers region-wide who currently have BellSouth® Long Distance service, based on results at the end of the first quarter. This includes about 13 percent of BellSouth's residential customers, and approximately 24 percent of its mass market business accounts. Of BellSouth's customers in Georgia and Louisiana, 18.5 percent of residential customers and 32.9 percent of mass market business customers have BellSouth as their long distance provider.
