RICHARDSON, Texas -- White Rock Networks, a provider of next-generation optical transport systems for metro networks, today announced the addition of high-density DS1 and 10/100 Fast Ethernet support to its VLX2020(TM) OC-48/192 SONET product family.
Carrier requests for a single, low-power, low-cost platform to efficiently provide services from DS1 up to OC-192 were the driving force behind White Rock's addition of its new ETS2 building block (which delivers DS1, Fast Ethernet and DS3 services in a single high-density tributary shelf).
The combination of the new ETS2 shelf with the VLX2020 Main Shelf creates an OC-192 SONET ADM with DS1, Fast Ethernet, DS3, Gigabit Ethernet, and OC-n services in a single network element requiring only 5 rack units (8 3/4") of central office space. Up to 672 DS1 or 192 Fast Ethernet services (in addition to multiple OC-n, Gigabit Ethernet and DS-3 services) can be delivered directly from a single OC-48/192 SONET network element. The ETS2 can also be combined with White Rock's other building blocks allowing carriers to cost-effectively mix and match service interfaces to meet diverse service requirements.
White Rock's new DS1 solution also provides unique features not found on other high capacity SONET ADMs; Each DS1 can be directly mapped into either a DS3-mapped STS-1 or a VT1.5-mapped STS-1 SONET payload. The unique direct DS1-to-DS3 mapping lowers carriers' CAPEX costs and simplifies their network architecture by integrating the DS1-to-DS3 M13 multiplexing function directly into the DS1 interface card. This eliminates the need for separately managed M13 multiplexers or the expensive DS3 transmux cards required in competitors' ADMs when carriers want to hand off customer DS1 services as DS3s elsewhere in their network. However, the optional VT1.5 mapping capability provides an easy migration path as carriers introduce next-generation VT1.5-based wideband cross-connect systems into their networks. Finally, the building-block architecture of the VLX2020 allows carriers to integrate DS1s directly into a SONET ADM without consuming valuable optical slots that could be utilized for higher value services in the future.
"DS1 and Fast Ethernet support were our customers' highest priority request for the VLX2020 family," said Lonnie Martin, Founder and CEO of White Rock Networks. "The White Rock building-block architecture has allowed us to add best of breed DS1 and Fast Ethernet delivery to the product family without burdening our customers with fixed costs for applications that do not currently need this capability," he added.
