DÜBENDORF-ZÜRICH, Switzerland -- Time Warner Cable (www.timewarnercable.com), an industry leader in delivering advanced products and services such as video on demand, high definition television, high-speed data, wireless home networking and digital video recorders, has selected Esmertec (www.esmertec.com, a leading provider of Java solutions for mobile phones and embedded devices, to provide its Jbed Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to help Time Warner Cable with its OCAP Open Cable Application Platform) development.
In the agreement, Esmertec will deliver Jbed CDC with FastDAC (Dynamic Adaptive Compiler) to enable Time Warner Cable’s solutions on OCAP, a platform that enables developers of interactive television services and applications to design such products so that they will run successfully on any cable television system in North America, independent of set-top or television receiver hardware or operating system software choices.
Cable platforms are being equipped with Java technology due to software compatibility, portability, cost efficiency and resource optimization advantages. Jbed CDC, a solution made to deliver superior runtime performance on small memory footprint, is a perfect-fit.
“Esmertec’s Java technology is recognised as a leading solution in the mobile and embedded device industry. Time Warner Cable’s decision to purchase Esmertec’s Java products shows clearly the competitive advantage of Esmertec’s solution for embedded devices such as set-top boxes, iTV and machine-to-machine systems,” said Alain Blancquart, CEO of Esmertec. “We look forward to providing excellent solutions and service to Time Warner and to the cable industry.”
The first commercially OCAP solution featuring Esmertec’s Jbed CDC with Time Warner’s content was presented at the Western Cable Show, Anaheim in December 2003.
