HONG KONG -- Telstra Global Business Asia (Telstra), today launched the company's first Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS), International Ethernet Service, in Asia Pacific covering Japan, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Singapore and Taiwan.

Telstra's International Ethernet Service is a cost-effective solution with higher customer control, allowing companies to connect multiple sites in a single bridged domain over Telstra's robust network.

"Hong Kong already has a well developed Metro-Ethernet infrastructure in place, which will be a major factor for its early adoption of VPLS in the region," said John Paitaridis, Regional Director, Telstra Global Business Asia.

"International Ethernet Service is an ideal choice for extending customers' domestic Ethernet circuit to different cities in the region. For instance in Hong Kong, many companies are migrating and outsourcing portions of their business to China in order to benefit from the low labour and operating costs. In order to keep the branch offices connected, Telstra's International Ethernet Service will be a key solution in terms of cost and control," he said.

International Ethernet Service allows companies to enjoy cost benefits as Ethernet is a more affordable solution than traditional multi-E1 circuit in a number of markets in Asia Pacific. Telstra has seen the growth of domestic Ethernet service in Asian and believes there is customer demand to extend the domestic Ethernet service by adding international connectivity.

VPLS, also known as transparent LAN service, is a trend that is gaining traction in Asia. Telstra's International Ethernet Service can easily be integrated into a customer's existing LAN/WAN, despite part of the network being connected via IPLC, ATM or MPLS IPVPN. In addition, this service requires no major investment from customers as it is easy to deploy and administer.

Other benefits brought by International Ethernet Service include scalable bandwidth, capability of supporting high capacity applications, competitive local access costs, transparent interface that improves network efficiency, as well as higher customer routing privacy. Customers can also enjoy clearly defined Quality of Service and Guarantee that is based on their own business requirements.

"Telstra's International Ethernet Service is an excellent alternative for International Private Leased Circuit (IPLC), Frame Relay (FR) and ATM with all the benefits that VPLS brings," John Paitaridis added. "Telstra has the most highly meshed MPLS-enabled IP backbone in Asia Pacific, providing incredible reliability to our customers. The launch of International Ethernet Service further extends our broad private and public IP service offerings to better serve our customer requirements."
