FRANKFURT -- T-Systems’ carriers’ carrier division, International Carrier Sales & Solutions (ICSS), has developed a Layer 2 Virtual Private Network solution for ISPs, next generation carriers and content providers. The offering enables ISPs to establish cost-efficient connections to Peering Exchanges.

The MPLS-based Layer 2 service provides Ethernet access into any of ICSS’ global points of presence, with Quality of Service guarantees. It delivers on the growing need for ISPs and carriers to fulfil their international aspirations by delivering a ‘virtual global presence’ without the capital outlay. It also allows remote international peering connections to be easily established, thus meeting the requirements of peering policies set out by international carriers.

For next generation carriers, the solution provides the necessary flexibility to rapidly address the growing VoIP and managed services market, without needing to invest in the backbone infrastructure. This fits into the revenue model of the next generation telecommunications providers.

Layer 2 also allows content providers to build a dedicated, easy-to-upgrade virtual network for handling the demands of broadband, media streaming and content distribution services.

“More and more ISPs and carriers are looking to differentiate on the strength of their geographical reach, but are reluctant to commit to the capital outlay this may require,” said Karl-Heinz Ratschkowski, Vice President, Product Management IP VPN Solutions at T-Systems ICSS. “There is definitely a trend towards investment in solutions which can reduce network expenses whilst providing a broader network of coverage. Our Layer 2 VPN provides usage-billed transport, putting costs in direct relation to revenue and reduces the operational expenses required for planning, management and maintenance of the backbone.”
