SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) today announced that it has completed the acquisition of Pixo, Inc., a privately-held company based in San Jose, California. Pixo provides the technology to manage the secure distribution and monetization of digital content for mobile subscribers and provides the critical link integrating the evolution of the Java(TM) 2 Platform, Micro Edition, with the pervasive adoption of Sun's Solaris(TM) Operating System and the Java(TM) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition. Pixo's products and technologies help simplify the deployment of new services for both network operators and enterprises and create a presence for Sun in the arena of digital rights and access management for content distribution.

Pixo is now an integral part of the Sun Software organization under the leadership of executive vice president Jonathan Schwartz. There are plans to integrate Pixo's products and technologies into Sun's existing end-to-end Java technology strategy, and offer this in conjunction with other mobility programs from Sun including the Sun(SM) Developer Network Mobility Program, Business Mobility Initiative and Unified Testing Initiative for Wireless Java Applications. Going forward, Pixo is designed to become an integral component of the Solaris(TM) Operating Environment and will leverage the Project Orion platform, which converges Sun's software offerings into a predictable, scheduled quarterly release of an integrated software system. By deploying Project Orion, customers can also benefit from an overall lower cost of acquisition and speed up time to deployment.

"Our new Application Download Service is based on Pixo's technology," said Brian O'Shaughnessy, vice President, Wireless Technology, Bell Mobility. "We selected Pixo after extensive evaluations and we look forward to working with Sun to help us achieve sustained business results."

"The future of the network is predicated upon the secure distribution and monetization of digital content," said Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice president, Software, Sun Microsystems. "Whether for the growth of the mobile handset marketplace, set top boxes, or the emerging landscape of Sun's desktop initiatives, Pixo is at the center of our platform strategy."
